Five Tips for an Energy Efficient Home

Insulation – Install proper insulation to achieve an energy efficient home. Insulating your water heater will help you greatly reduce energy costs throughout the year and reduce harmful CO2 emissions. Seal any leaky cracks in your air-ducts or ventilation systems to prevent a loss of heat and cool air. Next, update the insulation in your attic. This will help prevent ice dams in the winter and keep your home cool in the summer.

Windows and Doors – The sealant around your windows and doors acts a lot like insulation, preventing warm and cool air from escaping your home. Check for any leaks or cracks that need repair. Consider replacing your windows with energy efficient glass. This will helps you save on energy costs and prevent harmful UV rays from entering your home.

Lighting and Electricity – Replace any regular or old light bulbs with energy efficient halogen incandescents, CFLs, or LEDs. Consider upgrading or installing ceiling fans to help circulate air-flow throughout your home. Install a programmable thermostat to help you monitor and regulate heating/air-conditioning usage in your house.

Plumbing – Consider installing low-flow shower heads and toilets to minimize your water usage. Even cutting down shower time will help save you on your water costs. Inspect all pipes throughout your home. Repair any leaks or cracks. This includes repairing any leaky faucets.

Update Appliances – Upgrade your home appliances. Look for newer energy saving appliances. After using smaller appliances (toaster or computer), unplug them when you’re finished. Idling appliances can greatly affect your home energy costs.

  2. Some of the most valuable improvements you can make to your home are as simple as changing your light fixtures or HVAC system. As explained here, there are more energy-efficient products that will improve the comfort of your home and take less money out of your wallet. However, all of these strategies include making big changes/purchases (which I DO recommend), but they are not your only options for cutting down your electric bill. Small changes in your habits, like turning off lights and unplugging devices, will make a significant difference in your energy consumption.
